How Does It Work?

Cold Plunge

The cold plunge involves submerging your body into cold water, ideally below 60 degrees, for a period of 2 min or longer.  The cold water causes your blood vessels to constrict, diverting blood flow from the extremities to the vital organs.  The reduced blood flow to your muscles causes decreased inflammation and swelling. The cold exposure also activates brown fat which burns calories to generate heat, boosting your metabolism. In addition, the shock of the cold activates your sympathetic nervous system which releases endorphins (feel good hormones) that can improve your mood and energy levels.

Cold Plunge Tub Versus Ice Bath

Unlike ice baths where the temperature can vary, our plunge tub has a cooler that keeps the temperature a consistent 37 degrees.  If you don’t move your body in an ice bath, a thin layer of warm water develops around your body and insulates it from the cold water, reducing the benefits of the cold plunge.  In our tub, there is a jet that circulates the water, preventing that insulating layer from developing and maximizing the cold plunge benefits.

Sauna

Heat in contrast therapy has the opposite effect on the blood vessels.  The heat from the sauna promotes dilatation of the blood vessels which improves circulation to the muscles and joints.  The increased blood flow provides more oxygen and nutrients, actively helping with the recovery and healing process.  Heat also reduces muscle tightness and spasms and increases pliability of the tissues which reduces stiffness and improves flexibility.  Nerve endings are also soothed by heat which reduce pain and discomfort from training.  The increased blood flow also helps remove the toxins and waste products from the muscles.

Traditional versus infrared sauna

Traditional saunas heat the air around you, whereas infrared saunas heat the body itself.  Traditional saunas reach temperatures of 150-190 degrees, while infrared saunas typically operate at lower temperatures (120-140 degrees).  Due to the higher temperatures, sauna sessions are typically half the time in traditional saunas versus infrared saunas.  The added benefits of using a traditional sauna include opening pores up which flushes toxins out and rejuvenates the skin, deeper muscle relaxation and improved lung function and respiratory relief when used with steam.  Our Nordic Cycle is the only contrast therapy in Houston that uses a traditional sauna.

Contrast Hot and Cold

The cold phase of contrast therapy causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels), which limits inflammation and reduces swelling, while the heat phase promotes vasodilatation (opening of the blood vessels) that relaxes muscles and improves blood flow. Together, they create a pump-like effect that encourages circulation and enhances the benefits of each. It is recommended to do a few cycles of hot and cold to help reduce recovery time and enhance the healing process.
